AZADEH ELMIZADEH
WORKS
CV
Azadeh Elmizadeh works between painting and collage, exploring the generative potential of indeterminacies that emphasize states-of-becoming while resisting the instinct to arrive at a perfect state of being. She is interested in the consequences of cross-cultural encounters and how it leads to works of art that suspend cultural boundaries by occupying a space in-between. Her work draws on references from Persian miniature painting such as ascending flame-shaped apparitions, centrifugal movement of dancing Dervishes, vignettes, doors and openings as metaphors for liminality and transitional states of being. In her paintings, she utilizes a slow technique of layering translucent glazes of oil paint to create a condition of anticipation and temporal movement essential for capturing the dynamic process of becoming. Accumulation of these layers is similar to a form of collage or assemblage of discontinuous intervals of here and there, now and then represented simultaneously.
